Sistah's and Hair !

Really Short ! Really Bold.

The big chop is the most significant step of a natural journey but why is it such a big step and how does one prepare for it?

Caring for short cropped hair is relatively easy but that doesn't mean that you don't have to take care of your hair at all.

Product use

To maintain a fierce short style we tend to use more of a product to make sure every coil stays in place. This can become a problem when you use too much of a product too often. Especially heavy products like pomades can coat the hair over time. This will result in dry inflexible strands that just can't absorb more stuff. Adding more products won't solve the problem but may even make the problem worse.

Dry Scalp? Here are Some Hair Treatments.

This was Requested From a Reader of New Waves. And I must Say I think alot of Sistah's may have experienced  Dry ,Itchy ,or Flaky Scalps.I have had some more settle issues in the past.I dug up some info and here is what I got.

Many African Americans suffer from hair and scalp dehydration during the winter months. Have you ever noticed how dry and “ashy” your hands and feet are in the winter or during whether changes? Well there is a reason for these changes: the air is so dry that moisture is pulled from whatever is moist- in this case your skin, and your hair and scalp are suffering right along with the rest of the body. Under such circumstances, Hair and Scalp Dehydration can develop. HSD is a developed disorder that occurs when the hair and scalp is depleted of its natural moisture. This occurs in two ways: first, lack of the appropriate natural moisture to offset the sudden change in the climate or the environment that the hair and scalp is exposed to; second, using hair products that have a high pH, high protein, or high alcohol content. In extreme cases HDS will cause chronic scalp itch and flakes and hair breakage. During the winter months your hair goes through several traumatic and dehydrating dry changes in the course of a single day. You may have never thought about this, but if you live in a part of the country or world where the air is always dry or the winters are cold and dry, your hair and scalp has suffered from a form of HSD.

Changes you can take to avoid HDS

Deep moisture condition your hair twice a week.

Apply a small amount of moisturizer each day to your hair

In extreme cases and coarse hair textures, after applying moisture, apply oil on top to seal in the hydration.

Stay away from shampoos that have fillers, such as moisturizing shampoos, because they cause a filmy build-up that can be drying

Only use clarifying shampoos that have a pH between 4.5 to 5.5, the hair and scalp’s natural pH.

Apply oil not grease to your scalp ! ( This is true ! Here are some Products that you can try)

Another Popular Reason ..
Scalp psoriasis is a bothersome condition to many. In fact, about 50% of patients with psoriasis have it. The severity of flaking can range from fine dandruff-like flakes to plaques with thick, adherent scales. Scalp psoriasis can often extend beyond the hairline down the forehead onto the face, and the backs of the ears are often involved. ..

Straw Curls

A straw set can be a convenient way to wear natural black hair. Because it does not involve heat or excessive pulling, it can also be a healthy style for relaxed hair as well. Follow these directions if you would like to learn how to do a straw set for black hair.

1.WASH YOUR HAIR FIRST
The first step in doing a straw set for black hair should be to thoroughly clean your hair before the actual straw set process. Because black hair is fragile, you should make sure that you are using the best shampoo possible for your hair type.

2.CONDITION YOUR HAIR
For this straw set, and for basic everyday use, any basic conditioner will do the trick. Using the right conditioner is not nearly as important as using the correct type of shampoo for black hair.
*DO NOT DRY YOUR HAIR AFTER YOU CONDITION IT!

3.MOISTURIZE YOUR HAIR
After your hair has been washed and conditioned, you will need to use a light moisturizer. Put a little bit of your favorite moisturizer in your hands and run it through your hair. Make sure to moisturize your scalp as well.

4.DISTRIBUTE SETTING LOTION THROUGHOUT YOUR HAIR
Spray your hair lightly with a couple of bursts of setting lotion. Remember, the more setting lotion you use the tighter the set, and vice-versa.

5.ARRANGE YOUR HAIR INTO A MANAGEABLE STATE
Take your wide-tooth comb and VERY GENTLY arrange your hair in a way that makes it easy to manage. Make sure that it mirrors the way that you want your spiral curls to fall when you are done.

*A wide-tooth comb should always be used on black hair. Use narrow tooth combs for parting your hair only.

6.DISBURSE THE STRAWS THROUGHOUT YOUR HAIR
Grab a straw and about an inch-width of hair and wrap it around the straw in a spiral fashion. Roll the hair up into a tight spiral, then pin it with the bobby pins. Complete this step until you are finished with your entire head. This takes a more than a little bit of time, so you will want to get comfortable.

For maximum health of black hair, you should allow your hair to air dry. For a more polished look, you can let your hair dry underneath the hair dryer - if this method is used, make sure to utilize a small but adequate amount of thermal hair protector in step three.

When you are completely finished you will have a head full of beautify curls. Good luck with your straw curl set.

To straight

With your dry hair separated into sections, take the skinny flat iron with teeth and run it through the hair first to loosen tangles and to straighten the edges at the hairline and neck. Do the entire hair with this flat iron first. It will get the hair reasonably straight. For a child's hair--to make a pony tail with their hair--this is straight enough..Apply a leave-in heat protection conditioner on the ends of the hair to keep it from drying out. They come in liquid and cream form.Comb all of the hair forward so that it hangs over the forehead. Alternately, you can separate it into sections. I prefer to comb it forward as it keeps the hair I haven't straightened (the second time) out of the way.Continue this process until hair is straight to your liking.

Here are some tips in Coloring Techniques:
Temporary Hair color: a non-permanent color that only coats the hair shaft and can removed by shampooing. Temporary hair colors only makes a physical change in hair, not chemical. some examples of temporary hair colors are color rinses that are applied weekly, colored mousses and gels, hair mascara, spray-on hair colors, and color enhancing shampoos.

Semi permanent Hair color: a hair color formulated to last through several shampoos, depending on the hair’s porosity. Semi permanent hair colors do not lighten the hair, they stain the hair shaft, which gradually fade with each shampoo. This hair color usually last 6-8 weeks.

Demipermanent Hair color: a deposit only hair color, sometimes labeled as a semi permanent by certain manufacturers, but last longer than semi permanent hair colors.

Permanent Hair color: a hair color that is used to match, lighten, and even cover gray hair. Permanent hair colors require a developer (hydrogen peroxide) in order to work. This hair color remains on the hair shaft until there is new growth. Temporary, semi permanent, and demipermanent haircloth are often used to temporarily alter the look of permanent hair.

Looks very Different -But I guess as she wears the look more~ it becomes Just another Bold look.

Decisions on Cutting Your Hair:

I know your wondering how women make that big decision to cut their their hair.I did once upon a time like really , really short. My hair was shoulder length and had locked at the ends from me not combing.yes I know that disgusting but whatever.I have actually learned my lesson after I cut my hair above my ear lobes I cried like a baby- and in 4 months it had gown under my chin and in 6 monthes it grew past my shoulders.I opted for wearing weaves to give it body because my hair has length but is very thin and while I am maintaining my thin hair I know that I don't have the face to carry a short do.But for those who have always had short hair or want short hair, this one is for you.

The most dramatic way to quickly change your look is undoubtedly to change your hairstyle; whether you are dying for a new look, have tons of split ends to get rid of, or are just tired of the extra care involved in having long locks, Cutting it all off and going short offers a lot of options for style without too much daily maintenance, but also requires some forethought.
Step By Step. ( For Short Cuts)

1.The first step to achiving a great cut is to make sure that the hair is clean and free from all oils, and has been throughly dried.

2.Next you will need to section the hair off into four sections starting from the nape of your neck working your way to the crown of your head making sure that the sections are as equal as possible, then you will need to determine just how short you want the style to be, you will then take you index adn middle fingers and position the hair in the middle of your fingers and extend your hand so that the hair is lifted off the head and in a downward motion you will cut as close to your fingers as possible.

3.Continue this step all over your head until all hair has been cut evenly then you will take your rattail comb and comb your hair upward again going from the napr of your neck to the crowne of your head as you comb the hair use your shears to trim any hair that may have been missed in the first cutting. Your hair is now ready to be styled, you should now wrap or mold your hair to prepare for the actual styling of the hair please read the following articles to learn how to style this new cut.

Hair Care
Is your hair Breaking Off In One Spot?

I had an issue with my hair breaking off in one certain section of my head. It's always in that same spot and I didn't know what to do. The rest of my hair seems fine. There's always a reason for hair breaking off even if it's not very noticeable at first.I thought my hair is not colored or dyed ever in my lifetime, I have never permed my hair could I have exposed it to the Hot Comb ( yes I said it ) Hot comb. But I put heat protecting cream base on my hair but still I noticed thinning.I called a friend who has been a hair stylist since forever and Around the front roots and one side of my head in the back. She gave me list of reasons my hair may be breaking off and thinning:

1. Wearing the hair in the same over and over.

2. Pulling the hair too tight in the same spot.

3. Over processing the same spot.

4. Resting the head on the same spot.

5. Unconscious "picking" in the same spot (hair twirling, etc)

6. Hair weakened by heat styling in one spot. ( I think that's it ladies- umm humm)

She said the way to treat it is to first pinpoint what's happening with the section of hair and if it's any of the above, just stop doing it and the hair will stop breaking. Simple right.Uggghhh! and then she adds if it's none of the one she mentioned and the hair is still breaking it may just be a matter of strengthening your hair with regular deep protein treatments. And she suggested:

Protein offer the following benefits:
Strengthen dry, brittle hair,Keep hair strong in preparation for relaxers and after relaxers,Treats damaged hair from heat styling , and Temporarily mend split ends.

Review: Love it
Ladies I actually own this flat Iron and it is the Best.Heats up quickly and does the Job.

Applying Heat to Hair :

1.With your dry hair separated into sections, take the skinny flat iron with teeth and run it through the hair first to loosen tangles and to straighten the edges at the hairline and neck. Do the entire hair with this flat iron first. It will get the hair reasonably straight. For a child's hair--to make a pony tail with their hair--this is straight enough.

2.Apply a leave-in heat protection conditioner on the ends of the hair to keep it from drying out. They come in liquid and cream form.
3.Comb all of the hair forward so that it hangs over the forehead. Alternately, you can separate it into sections. I prefer to comb it forward as it keeps the hair I haven't straightened (the second time) out of the way.

4.Starting from the back, using the chi flat iron, slowly run it through sections of hair parting thin rows and straightening as you go. The hair will come out silky and shiny and offer no resistance when you run your fingers, or even a small-toothed comb through it. Continue until you get to the front and all of the hair is straightened. Your hair should be bone straight at this point and ready to style.

Hair Textures :

We come in all shapes, sizes and colors... and our hair comes in all shapes, widths and textures. It is difficult to categorize hair because of all the variation that occurs. However, attempts have been made to categorize in an effort to help people better know their hair. Black/Afro-type hair is difficult to categorize for a few reasons:

1) our hair differs in pattern - coils, springs. zig zags, s-curves
2) our hair differs in pattern size - watch spring to chalk size
3) our hair differs in density - sparse, dense
4) our hair differs in strand diameter - fine, medium, wide
5) our hair differs in feel - cottony, woolly, spongy And on one head it is possible to have all 5 category differences represented somewhere, each reacting differently to the same routine. Andre Walker, Oprah's stylist, came up with a system in his book, which put all hair into categories.

Number 1 being straight Asian type hair and 4 being "kinky" or "nappy" or "tightly coiled" African American type hair. He then divided the numbers with a lettering system, 'a' being the straightest within a category, 'b' being the next curly.. etc and so on down. Shine - hair that reflects light along its surface. Sheen - hair that sparkles as light bounces off it. Patterns L = Bend O = Curl I = Straight S = Wave Strands can be Thick, Medium or Thin/Fine One half of a piece of inexpensive sewing thread (such as the kind that is contained in those palm sized personal sewing kits) split in two is about the thickness of a medium strand size of human hair. If you hair is larger than this, then your strand size is thick. If you hair is smaller than the split thread, then your hair strand is thin, or fine. If you want to compare your hair strand to a split piece of thread, it can be done by moving the thread back and forth between your thumb and forefinger holding the free end taunt.

Textures:

* Thready - low sheen, high shine, low frizz Wiry - sparkly sheen, low shine, low frizz Cottony - low sheen, low shine, high frizz
Spongy - high sheen, low shine, high frizz Silky - low sheen, high shine, low frizz

Thready texture of hair usually has a low sheen, with high shine if the hair is held taunt (as in a braid), with low frizz.

Wets easily but water dries out quickly.

Wiry hair textures have sparkle sheen, with low shine and low frizz. Water beads up or bounces off the hair strands. Hair never seems to get fully wet.

Cottony hair texture will have a low sheen, a high shine if the hair is held taunt and has high frizz. Absorbs water quickly but does not get thoroughly wet very fast.

Spongy hair has a high sheen with low shine with a compacted looking frizz. Absorbs water before it gets thoroughly wet.

Silky hair has low sheen, a very high shine, with a lot or low frizz. Easily wets in water. How to determine which hair type you have:

1.Remove a single strand of the most common type of hair on your head. Aim for 70%, so if you have different textures, use the most common texture on your head.

2.The hair should be freshly washed without products applied to it and rinsed in cold water. Or, gently rinse a single hair with a little dish detergent and rinse in cold water.

3.Lay the hair on an absorbent paper towel to dry.

4.When the hair is completely dry, look at the pattern without touching it. If the hair has all bends, right angles and folds with little to no curve then you are L. If the strand is rolled up into the shape of one or several zeros like a spiral, then you are O. If the hair lies mostly flat with no distinctive curve or bend you are I. If the strand looks like a wavy line with hills and valleys then you are S. It will be common to have a combination of the LOIS letters, (with more dominant) which can help you determine which daughter of LOIS you are. If you cannot see one letter over the others, then combine the letters. Example: LO or IL or OS. With all this in mind, we'll combine Andre's system with LOIS for a general category, then further divide us into more detail. It is important to understand that every head of hair is different and it's impossible to include every one's exact hair. A close-as mentality is best when viewing other women's hair.
